Pakistan produced a spirited performance to level the two-match Test series against the West Indies, registering an emphatic eight-wicket victory in the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. The result ended Pakistan’s eight-match winless streak in away Tests and secured their first overseas Test victory in three years, providing a major confidence boost ahead of their upcoming tour of England.
After losing the opening Test by 90 runs, Pakistan arrived in Port of Spain under pressure. However, they responded with a complete team effort. Abdullah Shafique emerged as the standout performer, compiling a magnificent unbeaten 160 in the first innings. His marathon knock laid the foundation for Pakistan’s first-innings total of 387 and gave the visitors a crucial lead. Babar Azam also made an important contribution with a fluent 88, although his wait for another Test century continues.
Pakistan’s bowlers then took control of the contest. The spin attack, led by Sajid Khan and supported effectively by Ali Usman, dismantled the West Indies batting lineup in the second innings. The hosts were bundled out for just 117, leaving Pakistan a modest target of 75, which they chased comfortably with eight wickets in hand.
The victory was especially significant considering Pakistan were without Shan Masood, who missed the second Test after fracturing a finger during the opening match. Despite the setback, the visitors displayed resilience, discipline and composure to bounce back strongly.
Although the series finished 1-1, Pakistan will take plenty of positives from the tour. Abdullah Shafique rediscovered his best form, Babar Azam looked increasingly assured with the bat, and the bowling unit delivered under pressure. Most importantly, the triumph restored belief in Pakistan’s ability to compete and win in overseas conditions.
With a challenging three-Test series against England next on the calendar, Pakistan will hope this hard-earned victory serves as the turning point in their World Test Championship campaign.
