Strengths

Strong Middle Order

KKR has a strong middle order with quite a few power hitters in the squad. Players like Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, and Rovman Powell in the squad make the KKR’s middle order very strong. Also, Venkatesh Iyer is likely to play in the middle order and he can be effective at the back end of the inning.

Not just the middle order, they have a lot of options at the top order in Ajinkya Rahane, Quinton de Kock, R Gurbaz, and Sunil Narine. Even Venkatesh Iyer can play in the top order.

Spinners Web for KKR

sunil narine varun chakravarthy

KKR spinners can control the game in the middle overs. They have Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy in the team, which is a lethal combination. Both the spinners have a mystery and are hard to get away.

Along with the above two, they have an option of Anukul Roy, Moeen Ali, and Mayank Markande. With three spinners in the XI, they can choke the team in the middle overs.

Weaknesses

A ‘Slightly’ Weak Fast Bowling Group

Although they do have out-and-out pacers like Anrich Nortje, Umran Malik, and Spencer Johnson, all three haven’t played much cricket in recent times. Anrich Nortje and Umran Malik have had a history of injuries and both will make a comeback after their respective injuries. Johnson has just started playing regularly after Australia’s pace trio is out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He is a bit inexperienced and might not find a place in the first XI.

Also, KKR needs to use Andre Russell’s bowling well and needs to manage his workload as he is injury-prone.

Opportunities

Ajinkya Rahane can show the world that he has cricket still left in him. He has made a comeback in the WTC 2023 Final based on IPL performances. He will prove the selectors wrong if he does well in his captaincy and leads the team from the front with his batting.

Venkatesh Iyer, on the other hand, is Rahane’s deputy. He can establish himself as a future KKR captain as he has done well with the bat.

Threats

The threat lies in the weaknesses we have discussed above. Their fast bowlers are injury-prone. The franchise needs to manage its workload and will have to use it wisely.

Also, Gautam Gambhir has left the team which might impact the team’s strategy and think-tank. Gambhir brings a wealth of experience with him in the last season.

Expected KKR Playing XI for IPL 2025:-

DISCLAIMER: We are picking the best playing XI based on our analysis and game reading. Considering the conditions, the franchise can alter their playing XI. They can also change the team according to the player’s form.

Ajinkya Rahane (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Anrich Nortje, Varun Chakravarthy.

KKR can use Ramandeep Singh or Rovman Powell (by dropping a foreign player from the first XI) if they need a batter as an impact player. They can also bring in Umran Malik or Anukul Roy if they need fast bowling or a spin bowling option respectively as an impact sub.

Players to Watch Out For

Varun Chakravarthy

Varun Chakravarthy is the talk of the town at the moment. The way he has been bowling is mind-blowing to watch. He is bowling stump to stump, quicker through the air, and with accuracy. The opposition batters will find it hard to pick him if he continues to bowl in his rhythm.

Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer has made a name by performing well consistently. He is now an integral part of the franchise and can play anywhere from the top order to No. 7 in the batting. Iyer is a good fielder and can bowl a few overs if needed. He is a complete package and we will now see him in the new role of franchise’s vice-captain.

Anrich Nortje

Anrich Nortje is coming from a long injury break. He might take some time to get back into his groove, but he is one of the main weapons for KKR in fast bowling. The South African can bowl with the new ball, break partnerships in the middle overs and restrict runs in the death overs.

CONCLUSION: Will KKR defend their title this season?

KKR has a mixture of experience along with some fearless youngsters. Together, they can bring another trophy to their cabinet. KKR is a balanced side to defend the title.
